AI Forward Deployed Engineer

Senior / Stafffull-timeRemote (Global) · periodic travel to client sites$190k–$290k + equity
Forward Deployed Engineers are the tip of Overnox's spear. You embed directly with a client's team, learn their domain and constraints cold, and build the working AI system that generic tooling can't — closing the last mile between "the model can do this" and "this is live, secure, and creating value in production." It's the role Palantir invented and that OpenAI, Anthropic, and the best AI companies are now racing to hire, because foundation models are powerful but generic: turning them into adopted, trusted systems takes a founding engineer sitting inside the problem. You'll operate as part software engineer, part solutions architect, part trusted advisor. In a single engagement you might reverse-engineer a client's data model, stand up a RAG or multi-agent workflow against their systems, wire in evals and guardrails, and hand the client's own engineers a maintainable codebase — then do it again somewhere new. You write real production code and own outcomes end to end, not tickets. This is a high-autonomy, high-trust role for engineers who are energized by direct customer impact and ambiguity. You're the face of Overnox's technical credibility in the room, and often the reason a client renews and expands.

What you'll do

  • Embed with client teams to scope, design, and ship production AI systems (RAG, agents, agentic workflows, LLM integrations) inside their environment and constraints
  • Integrate against messy real-world systems — internal APIs, data warehouses, auth, legacy services — and make them production-grade
  • Build evaluation harnesses, guardrails, and observability so the AI system is measurable, safe, and trusted before it ships
  • Translate ambiguous business problems into concrete technical architectures, then build them hands-on
  • Hand off maintainable code and documentation to the client's engineers, and level them up in the process
  • Act as the primary technical relationship for the engagement — surfacing risks, managing scope, and driving adoption
  • Feed recurring client patterns back into Overnox's reusable accelerators, playbooks, and internal products
  • Move across engagements and domains, ramping quickly on each client's stack and vocabulary

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years shipping production software, with real experience delivering LLM/AI systems (RAG, agents, or model integrations) to real users
  • Strong in Python and/or TypeScript, and comfortable owning a system from data layer to API to deployment
  • Proven ability to work directly with customers/stakeholders — you communicate crisply and build trust with both engineers and executives
  • Comfort with ambiguity and unfamiliar codebases; you ramp fast and make progress without a detailed spec
  • Solid grasp of cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure), containers, and CI/CD — enough to deploy and operate what you build
  • Product and outcome mindset: you optimize for the client's result, not lines of code
  • Willingness to travel periodically to client sites when an engagement calls for it

Nice to have

  • Prior Forward Deployed Engineer, solutions engineering, or high-touch consulting experience
  • Experience with eval frameworks, LLM-as-judge, MCP, and agent orchestration
  • Security or compliance awareness (SOC 2 / HIPAA) when deploying into regulated clients
  • Startup or 0-to-1 experience building under real-world constraints
